While minimal music does not always have to have a constant pulse, I would not immediately say that this aria sounds minimal, and thus it could have fit into an early twentieth century opera possibly by Stravinsky. In the aria "Batter my heart" while the Baritone sings there is no pulse underneath in the instrument part, instead there are slow chords that play along with him. While John Adams utilizes minimal composition techniques he also uses other techniques. Overall the opera is not limited minimal composing. Peter Sellars also used poetry from Charles Baulderie and Muriel Rukeyser and also quotes Bhagavad Gita, which is a traditional Tewa Indian song.
